Its distinguish and unique name describes the origin of what our business means... "808”, the area code of the Hawaiian Islands and “ONO”, a native word used in Hawaii which means delicious. Combined, along with Musubi, signifies a “Delicious Food Staple of Hawaii”.

Musubi, a cross similarity between sushi and a burrito, is a culinary icon of the Hawaiian Islands. Though its popularity with the “locals” has been there for many years, this rice centric favorite originated from Japan. In the former years, it was as simple as taking a hand full of rice and pressing down with the hands into a ball, often times wrapped in Nori, (dried seaweed). It was then considered a soldiers meal because they were eaten on the go by members of the military.

Comparatively, Hawaii’s military branches had their own ready to eat meal…Spam. This prepared lunch meat then was introduced to the islanders in the area and have become one of Hawaii’s main food staples.

Ironically, these two food delicacies merged into an islander favorite known as Spam Musubi (rice brick topped with Spam and wrapped with Nori) and made its mark from the beginnings in the home kitchens to its explosive mass market popularity selling in convenient stores and local restaurants throughout the islands and on the Mainland. Eaten as an appetizer, an addition to a meal or a meal itself, this versatile and convenient treat is the premier dish for those who are on the go.

In relatively recent years, the Musubi has evolved to include other fillings such as chicken, fish and beef. Though not a new concept, here at 8ONO8 Musubi^®, we are not only introducing more than 20 different intercultural fillers, such as our signature MT Mighty Mahi, Chili Lava, Krispy Chicken Krunch and Hot Lava Tuna, but we are the only known carry out establishment serving Musubi’s exclusively. We use the freshest ingredients, a tasty Nori and use a variety of Furikake (seasoning) to give you that bold and robust flavor in every Musubi we serve.
